Rehab Center Named for Heart Care Champion Leonard Kaplan believed in giving back to the community, and he was passionate about helping heart patients in the Piedmont Triad improve their quality of life. In 1979, Kaplan and close friend Jerry Ruskin, MD, along with other physicians and nursing staff, created Greensboro’s first cardiac rehabilitation program at the local YMCA. In recognition of a generous gift made by Kaplan’s wife, Tobee, Moses Cone Hospital named its cardiopulmonary rehabilitation unit The Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Health. The Kaplan Center has grown from these early beginnings. Today, at any given time, around 300 people participate in rehabilitation at the hospital. They walk, peddle stationary bikes and lift weights in the ground floor gym. They also learn about heart-healthy eating in the center’s classrooms. Philanthropy Supports Heart Programs The Cone Health Heart and Vascular Center has generous donors to thank for many of the lifesaving services we offer in the community. Charitable contributions allow us to provide the latest diagnostic tools and advanced surgical procedures. They also support clinical trials and rehabilitation services to improve patient outcomes. Our donors include former patients and family members who want to give back to the programs that benefitted them. Others donate because they recognize the Heart and Vascular Center is a valuable community asset with a national reputation for excellence. Advanced Heart Failure Fund allows us to support in a holistic manner heart failure patients who face barriers in their health care journey. Cardiac Rehabilitation Fund enables financial scholarships and support for patients who are in need of cardiac rehabilitation but are uninsured or unable to afford insurance or Medicare co-payments. Charles H. Wilson Fund supports both the Charles H. “Bucky” Wilson Keynote Lecture at the annual Heart and Vascular Center Symposium and cardiovascular surgical nursing education. D. Earl Pardue Cardiology Fund provides scales to congestive heart failure patients at Alamance Regional Medical Center who must monitor their weight but cannot afford to buy the scales. The fund also pays service fees for patients who would benefit from cardiac rehabilitation but cannot afford to participate. J. D. Lawson Fund honors Dr. Lawson and his many accomplishments, supporting an annual lecture highlighting advances in peripheral vascular surgery. LeBauer Cardiovascular Research Fund supports the programs of the LeBauer-Brodie Center for Cardiovascular Research and Education, expanding access to innovative strategies and therapies, and driving educational efforts through support of ongoing physician education and resident/student internships.
