Cone Health started the innovative CNA I Certification
Program in August 2025. This strategic initiative creates career
pathways, strengthens employee engagement and addresses
critical staffing needs across the health system.
Cone Health team members who want to expand their career
in health care can become Certified Nursing Assistants. This
structured pathway is available across the organization,
including those working in Environmental Services, Nutritional
Services, Supply Chain and other support roles.
Participants receive comprehensive education through
classroom instruction, simulation training and hands-on
clinical experiences, while remaining employed within the
organization. To remove barriers to advancement, Cone Health
covers tuition, books and fees, and departments provide paid
education hours.
CNA I Certification Program Successes
• 11 graduates
• 100% certification exam rate
• 100% retention rate
Beyond certification, the CNA I Certification Program serves
as a foundation for long-term career growth. Many nurse
leaders, educators and health care professionals began their
journeys in entry-level roles. This program creates similar
opportunities to advance in health care career pathways,
including progression from CNA to LPN and RN roles. By
investing in internal talent, Cone Health strengthens workforce
stability, reduces recruitment costs and builds a sustainable
pipeline of future health care professionals.
Recent graduates of the CNA I Certification Program with instructor
Terri Thurman, MSN, RN. Demario Lockhart (MHT), Thelma Johnson
(Materials), Jamiaya Jackson (MHT), Leandra McLaughin (Food and
Nutrition), Shantay Bell (EVS), Sheila Fryar (Food and Nutrition), and
Melissa Peterson (EVS).
“It’s a great opportunity for
people coming into the hospital,
whether in EVS, working with
Materials or in Nutrition,” says
Thelma Johnson, who recently
graduated and will be working at
Moses Cone Hospital 3 East.
 “Never give up and keep
pushing for what you believe in.”
