Established in 2021, the Cone Health Executive Nurse Leadership Academy (ENLA) was created as a strategic and innovative succession planning initiative designed to prepare emerging nurse leaders for advancement across the organization. The academy provides a structured leadership development pathway through four progressive levels, equipping participants with the knowledge, skills and experiences needed to successfully transition into higher levels of leadership. ENLA is grounded in the evidence-based 70-20-10 learning model, which emphasizes leadership growth through experiential learning (70%), developmental relationships and mentoring (20%), and formal education (10%). Participants commit to a yearlong program that combines didactic learning, immersive leadership experiences, mentoring, networking and hands-on application. A key component of the academy is a project management experience that enables participants to address real organizational challenges while developing leadership competencies. Since inception, ENLA has demonstrated significant success as a nursing leadership pipeline strategy. • 37 nurse leaders have graduated since the start of the program. • 59.45% of graduates are now in leadership positions. • 76% of participants starting the program have completed it. The program was developed and is facilitated by Smita Glosson, DNP, RN, System-wide Nurse Retention and Excellence Manager, ENLA co-lead; Meka Ingram, DNP, RN, Director, System-wide eLink tele-ICU, CCMD, ENLA co-lead; and Vi–Anne Antrum, DNP, RN, System-wide Chief Nursing Officer for Cone Health. Through intentional development, mentorship and experiential learning, ENLA continues to strengthen the leadership bench at Cone Health and cultivate the next generation of nursing leaders committed to excellence in patient care, workforce engagement and organizational success.
