What started as a routine laboring patient turned into a race against time, as her water broke and the marriage certificate was due to expire at midnight. It all began when a nurse at the Women’s & Children’s Center at Moses Cone Hospital overheard a quiet exchange between patient Jasmine Smith and her fiancé Latroy Parker. Through tears, Smith apologized. “I’m sorry the day isn’t going how we planned. We won’t get to do it today.” The nurse learned the couple had planned to have their wedding that day. Family had traveled to town for the event, and the couple was ready – but life had other plans. That’s when the center’s team sprang into action. Nurses and staff rallied together to arrange a wedding with cake, flowers, sparkling juice and a minister. The day became a celebration of love, teamwork, compassion and life. Celebrating a Wedding and a Birth Team Creates Extraordinary Memory for Patient Rev.
