In rural communities, health care thrives through connection, education and inspiration. In 2025, Annie Penn Hospital’s nursing leadership reached out to students across Rockingham County to foster early interest in health care careers and strengthen community ties. Nurse leaders engaged elementary and middle school students through interactive experiences. At Monroeton Elementary School, students participated in hand hygiene activities and practiced CPR skills using a training mannequin. These experiences sparked curiosity and introduced foundational health care concepts in a memorable way, planting early seeds of interest in nursing and caregiving professions. Annie Penn Hospital also hosted 12 Rockingham County middle school students who expressed interest in health care careers. Students took part in mock emergency code drills, surgical scrubbing and gowning exercises, and guided hospital tours. The students were able to connect classroom learning to real-world practice and began envisioning themselves as future health care professionals. These outreach efforts create a powerful dual impact. Students gain early exposure to health care pathways and engage with inspiring professionals. At the same time, nurse leaders are reinvigorated by the enthusiasm and curiosity of young learners, reconnecting with their professional purpose and the impact of their work. By building early career pipelines, fostering interest and providing meaningful exposure, Annie Penn Hospital is investing in the next generation of health care professionals and ensuring the continued strength and vitality of the community’s health care system.
